Our History

Chapel stained glass

The Augustinian Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus arrived in South Africa in the late nineteenth century, sent from Dieppe in France to bring care and hospitality to those most in need.

For more than 125 years our sisters have ministered in hospitals, schools and homes across KwaZulu-Natal, faithful to the Rule of Saint Augustine and the call to recognise Christ in the poor and the sick.

“Love separates the saints from the world by making them of one mind, living under the same roof.”

Today our community continues the same mission across our convents at Botha's Hill, Estcourt, and Pomeroy — anchored in the Eucharist, the divine office, and a shared life of prayer and service.
